Temporary Car Insurance Certificate Checklist
Insure Car Cover Editorial Team · October 19, 2026 · 7 min read
A temporary car insurance policy is built around precise details: one named driver, one vehicle, a defined use and exact start and end times. Before driving, open the issued certificate and compare it with the journey you are about to make.
A receipt is not the same as an issued policy
A successful card payment or checkout screen shows that a transaction took place. It does not replace the policy certificate. Wait for confirmation that the policy was accepted and issued, then use the certificate to verify when cover begins.
The six details to check
- Your full name and driver details are correct.
- The vehicle registration matches the car exactly.
- The start date and time have arrived before you set off.
- The end date and time cover the complete return journey.
- The permitted use includes the journey you intend to make.
- You understand the excess, exclusions and claims contact details.
What if the Motor Insurance Database has not updated?
A newly issued temporary policy may not appear on every database immediately. The Motor Insurers' Bureau advises keeping evidence of insurance. Save the certificate to your phone and keep the provider's contact details available.
Fix mistakes before the journey
Do not simply drive and plan to correct a wrong registration, name or time later. Ask the provider whether the policy can be corrected or whether a replacement is required. The issued documents must accurately describe the risk being covered.
Keep the full policy pack
Alongside the certificate, retain the policy wording and statement of fact. They explain exclusions, excesses, permitted drivers, geographical limits and what to do after an incident. Store a copy where it can be reached without relying on mobile reception.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive after paying but before receiving the certificate?
Do not assume payment alone means cover is active. Wait until the policy is issued and the certificate confirms the correct details and active start time.
What if my registration is wrong on the certificate?
Contact the provider before driving. The document must identify the correct vehicle, and the provider should explain whether a correction or replacement policy is required.
Does a delay on the MID mean I am uninsured?
Not necessarily. Database updates can take time, but you should retain the issued certificate and contact the provider if the status is uncertain.
