How to Save Money on Temporary Car Insurance | Tips & Tricks

James Sterling · August 12, 2026 · 4 min read

Temporary car insurance is an incredibly convenient way to get on the road legally without the commitment of an annual policy. However, like any financial product, the costs can vary. If you are looking for cheap temporary car insurance, a few simple adjustments can significantly lower your premium.

1. Match the Duration Exactly to Your Journey

One of the easiest ways to waste money is buying more coverage than you need. Because temporary policies are highly flexible, you can choose durations down to the hour. Ask yourself: do you really need a full day's cover, or would 3 hours do the job?

  • Hourly Cover: Perfect for picking up a vehicle, sharing driving duties on a short road trip, or test driving a car.
  • Daily Cover: Ideal for weekend trips, moving house over 24-48 hours, or emergency usage.
  • Weekly/Monthly Cover: Best for student holiday visits or longer borrowing periods.

2. Protect the Owner's No Claims Discount (NCD)

If you borrow a car, adding yourself as a named driver on the owner's annual policy can be risky. If you are involved in an accident, their No Claims Discount could be wiped out, causing their annual premiums to skyrocket for years.

3. Choose an Eligible, Lower-Risk Vehicle

Insurance premiums are heavily dependent on the car's insurance group (which ranges from group 1 to 50 in the UK). If you have a choice of borrowing a vehicle, always opt for the one in a lower group. Insuring a 1.2-litre hatchback temporarily will always be cheaper than insuring a 3.0-litre SUV.

4. Keep a Clean Driving Record

Just like annual insurance, your personal driving history impacts short-term quotes. Maintaining a clean record free of motoring convictions, points, and recent claims is the single best way to ensure you always get the lowest rates.
